The National Electricity Market (NEM) is in a critical time of transformation. Investment is needed in generation, storage, network infrastructure, and other new technologies to deliver affordable energy for consumers and maintain grid stability and reliability. NSW is at the centre of the transformation.

The NSW Government released the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap (the Roadmap) in 2020 to coordinate development of the electricity infrastructure needed in the State to deliver affordable, clean and reliable electricity.

The Network Infrastructure Strategy (NIS) is an important element of NSW’s the Roadmap framework. EnergyCo has now published the Draft Network Infrastructure Strategy (NIS).

The Draft NIS marks the start of this process of transformation in NSW. The Draft NIS provides further information about the delivery and coordination of NSW REZ transmission network infrastructure, downstream network augmentations and network connections for large-scale renewable energy and storage projects.

Consultation with key stakeholders will be central to the development of the strategy, which aims to gather input from regulatory bodies, Transmission Network Service Providers (TNSPs) / Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs), industry participants and the broader community.

From this diverse stakeholder engagement, the goal is to synthesise a holistic approach that not only looks at technical and economic efficiency but also social license and practicality in its strategy.

EnergyCo welcomes input on the Draft NIS, and has crafted a series of questions to help stakeholders form submissions over the consultation period. The Final NIS is expected to be released in 2023.

To provide feedback on the Draft NIS, please send your submission to contact@energyco.nsw.gov.au. The consultation period closes on Friday 28 October 2022.
