The accolade was announced during the 2023 Australia Museum Eureka Awards ceremony held last night.

Led by Dr. Stuart Walsh from Monash University's Engineering Department and Dr. Marcus Haynes from Geoscience Australia, the research team developed an innovative online platform that allows users to create highly accurate maps that facilitate informed decision-making concerning the optimal resource locations for development projects.

By enabling well-informed decisions, the Economic Fairways Mapper is positioning Australia as a key player in facilitating the transition towards a low-emissions future.

The Economic Fairways Mapper tool underpins the Australian Government Hydrogen Hub strategy, a multi-million-dollar initiative unveiled in September 2021. The tool has also been embraced by industries for preliminary assessments of potential projects within Australia.

Dr. Stuart Walsh noted the tool's ability to guide investments towards strategic opportunities.

“I am extremely proud of the research team and this acknowledgement from the science community. This Mapper is extremely important and pivotal for the development of energy resource options across the world,” said Dr Walsh.

Geoscience Australia's CEO, James Johnson, commended the research team for their dedication and innovation in creating the Economic Fairways Mapper tool. He recognised the tool's crucial role in driving sustainable change and contributing to the target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes, which celebrate excellence across various scientific domains including research, innovation, leadership, and science engagement, are presented annually in partnership with esteemed scientific institutions, government organizations, universities, and corporations.

This recognition reflects the culmination of hard work, dedication, and innovation by the researchers and institutions involved, making a notable contribution to the advancement of sustainable practices and technologies.
